Lagos House of Assembly Stood Still as CP Odumosu Proceeds on Retirement
The outgoing Commissioner of Police, Mr
Hakeem Odumosu, who is set to retire in January 2022, has been honored by the
Lagos State House of Assembly.
Mr.
Odumosu led a team of policemen to the Assembly during plenary in Lagos on
Wednesday, the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, announced this.
According to the Nigerian News Agency
(NAN), the outgoing CP has been promoted to Assistant Inspector-General of
Police.
The speaker went on to say that this was
because he was thought to have successfully controlled the state's security.
He commended Odumosu for being honest
and responsive whenever there were concerns threatening the peace of Lagosian .
“This
is because men of the Nigeria Police Force need to build more trust among the
people and make the latter know they are truly being served.
“Everybody
must be treated with respect, dignity and honour and that is how we can earn
our respect.
“Policing should not be about harassment and extortion but building
trust among the people and making them comfortable.”
In his
remarks, Mr Odumosu said he would always
be grateful to the state for allowing him and his staff to efficiently handle
the state's security and make it the most tranquil in the country.
The CP,
who described Lagos as a Mini-Nigeria, said that the Lagos Assembly's
proactiveness resulted in laws that have helped the state's police remain
effective.
According
to Odumosu, the Cultism Prohibition Law has aided in the reduction of illegal
organizations in the state's higher institutions, as well as adequate awareness
of property owners and citizens.
“Other laws include the Land Use
Charge amendment law which has reduced the activities of land grabbers, the
Anti-Open Grazing law, the Neighborhood Safety Corps law.
“This is to ensure synergy among security agencies, the Coronavirus
Pandemic Law, which enforcement helped reduce the spread of COVID-19.
“We promise to continue to excel in providing water-tight security for
the people of the state,” he told the lawmakers.
The CP also stated that he would encourage his successor to maintain
the relationship between the police and the House, as well as imploring
Lawmakers to support whoever succeeds him.
The
lawmakers congratulated Odumosu on his accomplishments and stated that his expertise
will be required in the state even after he retired.
